Coast Cafe, Poole, England
Parked on the pavement is a growing collection of bikes and hot-rods. It’s just gone eight in the evening, late October, and the unseasonably warm weather has ensured a packed house. We’re in Coast, a cafe cum surf shop, just a couple of minutes ride from Poole town centre.
Coast hosts plenty of one-off events, attracting a cross section of skaters, BMXers, bikers, hot-rodders as well as the inevitable herd of surf dudes, creating a wonderful laid back vibe.
It’s the brainchild of Chris Culley and his family and until three years ago it was occupied by H2O Watersports. But when they downsized, Chris took the opportunity to establish the cafe. Daughter Larna says: “My mum Hayley and my sister Kathy wanted to open a cafe and my brother Jake wanted a surf shop.”
Chris adds: “Jake and I are mad on bikes, cars and surfing.” Besides coffee and cake, the shop also has a great cross-section of lifestyle gear from names such as Deus,
Loser Machine, Obey, Iron and Resin and Lightning Bolt.
The First Electric Tattoo Parlour is a permanent fixture and tonight there’s also The Blind Barber offering haircuts and beard trims.
Also tonight the shop is graced by two Siderock Cycles BMW cafe racers, Sam Evans’ Inglorious Motorcycles’ CX500 and a couple of Deus customs.
If you are down south, it’s worth a visit anytime, but if you can make one of their special events, you won’t be disappointed.
